Bed Safety Standards & Testing

The safety and quality of our children's beds are important to us. Our beds are supplied to meet recognised British and European safety standards appropriate to the type and height of the bed.

Raised Beds, High Sleepers & Bunk Beds – EN 747

Our raised beds, including high sleepers and bunk beds, are tested in accordance with the EN 747 standard for bunk beds and high beds.

The current standard, BS EN 747-1:2024, specifies requirements for the safety, strength and durability of bunk beds and high beds. It applies to high beds and bunk beds where the upper surface of the bed base is 600mm or more above the floor. The associated BS EN 747-2:2024 sets out the test methods used to assess these requirements.

Testing covers important aspects of the bed's construction and safety, including strength, durability, stability, protective barriers, ladders and other features designed to reduce the risk of accidents.

Lower Children's Beds – BS 8509

Our smaller and lower children's beds, where the sleeping height is below 600mm, are supplied in accordance with BS 8509 – Children's beds for domestic use: Safety requirements and test methods, where applicable.

BS 8509 covers safety requirements and testing for children's beds and includes requirements relating to mechanical and structural safety, including the strength and durability of the bed base, head and foot boards and safety rails where fitted.

Mattresses – BS 7177

Our mattresses are tested to BS 7177, the British Standard covering the resistance to ignition of mattresses, mattress pads, divans and bed bases.

BS 7177 specifies the appropriate requirements for resistance to ignition and refers to recognised fire-testing methods including BS EN 597-1 and BS EN 597-2.

This provides an important additional level of fire-safety testing for mattresses supplied with our beds.

What Does This Mean?

These standards are designed to help ensure that children's beds are appropriately designed and tested for their intended use. Depending on the type of bed, testing can cover factors such as:

  • Structural strength and durability
  • Stability
  • Safety barriers and guard rails
  • Ladders and access points
  • Bed-base strength
  • Protection against entrapment and other mechanical hazards
  • Resistance to ignition for mattresses

We recommend that every bed is assembled exactly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and used in accordance with the stated age, height, weight and other safety recommendations supplied with the product.
