Junior and toddler beds are sized for younger children, using a shorter mattress rather than a full-size single — ideal for the transition from cot to first "big bed" without the bed dominating a small room. Our range is entirely from Hoppekids, made from sustainably sourced pine, with several models available plain or with storage drawers built in underneath.

Junior shorty single beds

A low, simple single bed sized for a younger child — no ladder, no raised platform, just a smaller footprint than a standard single.

A bed that grows with them

If you'd rather not replace the bed again in a couple of years, an extending frame adjusts as your child grows.

Junior shorty playhouse and mid sleeper beds

A little more playful, for children ready for something raised slightly off the floor.

Junior shorty bunk beds

For two children sharing a room, our junior shorty bunk beds use the same lower, easier-to-climb frame with wider steps. See the full range and pricing in the Bunk Beds collection, including options with storage drawers from £479.

Sizes and mattresses

Junior shorty single beds take a shorter 160cm mattress rather than a full 190cm UK single — a genuinely smaller footprint that suits a smaller room and a smaller child. Shorty bunk beds are a separate size again, at 175cm; check the exact mattress size stated on each product page before ordering bedding.

Choosing the right junior bed

There's no fixed age at which a child needs to move from a cot into a first bed — most make the move somewhere between 18 months and three years old, when safety becomes the main consideration rather than size. A low, junior-sized bed keeps the mattress close to the floor and avoids the empty space around a full single that a toddler doesn't yet need. Once your child has outgrown junior sizing, our full Single Beds range takes a standard 190cm mattress.

Junior shorty beds: common questions

What mattress size does a junior shorty bed need?

160cm, shorter than a standard 190cm UK single. Always check the exact size stated on the product page.

What age is a junior bed suitable for?

Most children move from a cot to a first bed between 18 months and three years old. A junior shorty bed suits this transition well since it sits low to the ground.

Will my child outgrow a junior bed quickly?

Eventually, yes — which is why some families prefer our extending Heritage Pull-Out bed, or simply move up to a standard single once the child has grown.

Do junior beds come with storage?

Several of our junior shorty beds have an under-bed storage drawer built in — useful in a small nursery or first bedroom.
