Highsleeper Loft Beds
Highsleeper loft beds raise the mattress up and free up valuable floor space below — perfect for smaller bedrooms or for creating a proper study and play area for older children and teens. Our range includes highsleepers with fitted desks, wardrobes, chests of drawers and even sofa beds or fold-out chairbeds tucked underneath, so the space below the bed works just as hard as the bed itself.
Every highsleeper we sell meets EN 747, the European safety standard covering guard rail height, ladder stability and structural load testing, and is made from FSC® certified wood. As authorised UK dealers for Kids Avenue, Parisot, Thuka and Trasman, we offer genuine manufacturer warranties, free delivery on a specialist carrier, and an optional expert home assembly service.
High sleepers with a sofa bed or chairbed
A sofa bed or fold-out chairbed underneath turns a highsleeper into two beds in one footprint — ideal for sleepovers without giving up floor space the rest of the week.

High sleeper, bunk or mid sleeper?
A high sleeper is the tallest of the three and gives the most usable space underneath, since only one bed needs to fit below — room for a full desk, wardrobe or sofa bed rather than a second mattress. If two children need to sleep in the same room, a bunk bed makes better use of the space. If the ceiling height or your child's age rules out a full highsleeper, a mid sleeper or cabin bed offers a similar, lower-height layout.
Sizes and mattresses
Highsleepers typically take a 90 x 190cm UK single mattress, though several of our European-designed models — particularly from Parisot and Thuka — use the slightly longer 90 x 200cm continental single instead. The size needed is always stated on the product page.
Mattress depth is a safety measurement, not just a comfort one. Guard rails are set a fixed height above the mattress surface, so a mattress deeper than the manufacturer's stated maximum reduces that protection. Our Children's Mattress Buying Guide has more detail.
Safety and room height
Every highsleeper we sell meets EN 747, and most manufacturers recommend them for children aged six and over — old enough to climb the ladder safely and use the bed responsibly. What's specific to highsleepers compared with a lower bed:
- Check ceiling clearance directly above where the bed will stand, so your child can sit up comfortably without being close to the ceiling
- Watch for sloped ceilings, loft conversions, ceiling fans and smoke alarms when positioning the bed
- Guard rails fitted and secure on all sides, with no wobble
- The correct mattress size and depth for that specific bed
- Fixings re-checked every few months, especially in the first year of use
Our full High Sleeper Bed Safety Guide covers ladder habits, positioning and age guidance in more depth.
Choosing the right high sleeper for your room
Measure room width, length and ceiling height above the bed's exact position before ordering, along with the space needed for the ladder and for any doors or wardrobes nearby to open fully. If the bed includes a pull-out sofa bed, check the floor space needed for it to extend.
| Age | Guidance |
| Under 6 | Not recommended |
| 6–8 years | Suitable with supervision and clear ground rules |
| 9–12 years | An excellent fit, with plenty of use from the desk and storage |
| Teenagers | A popular choice — see our range built for teenagers |
Highsleeper loft beds: common questions
What age is a high sleeper suitable for?
Most manufacturers recommend six and over, reflecting the coordination and confidence needed to climb the ladder safely.
How much ceiling height do I need?
Enough for your child to sit up comfortably on the bed without being close to the ceiling. Measure directly above where the bed will stand, and check for sloped ceilings or loft conversions.
What size mattress does a high sleeper need?
Most take a UK single at 90 x 190cm. Several European-designed models need the slightly longer 90 x 200cm continental single — always check the product page.
Can adults sleep in a high sleeper?
Some of our models support adult use — check the manufacturer's weight guidance on the product page before ordering.
What's the difference between a high sleeper and a mid sleeper?
A high sleeper sits taller, giving more usable space underneath for a full desk, wardrobe or sofa bed. A mid sleeper is lower, which suits younger children or rooms with less ceiling height.
Are high sleeper beds safe?
Yes, when assembled correctly and used as intended. Every bed we sell meets EN 747 — what matters at home is the age guidance, correct mattress depth, secure guard rails and adequate ceiling clearance. See our full safety guide for more detail.
If a highsleeper feels a little tall for your child right now, our Midsleeper Cabin Beds and Bunk Beds offer similar storage-smart designs at a lower height. Not sure which is right?
