High Sleeper & Loft Beds for Adults: UK Buying Guide
High sleepers, loft beds and bunk beds aren't just for children. In a studio flat, a small spare room, a student house or a box room that has to double as a home office, raising the bed is one of the most effective ways to get a desk, a sofa or a wardrobe into the same footprint. The question most adults ask first is simple: will it take my weight?
This guide explains what to look for in a high sleeper, mid sleeper or bunk bed for adult use, and which beds in our range are rated for it.
Can adults use a high sleeper or loft bed?
Yes — provided the bed is rated for it. The key figure is the maximum user weight, which is set by the manufacturer for each bed.
Every Kids Avenue bed we sell is suitable for adults, with a maximum user weight of 100kg. That covers their high sleepers, mid sleepers, cabin beds and bunk beds, so all of the beds listed in this guide can be used by an adult up to that weight.
For beds from our other brands, always check the weight guidance on the individual product page, or get in touch and we'll confirm it for you.
Who an adult high sleeper suits
- Studio flats and small one-bed flats — a desk or sofa underneath gives you a living area without a separate room.
- Home offices and spare rooms — a proper workspace in the day, a bed for guests at night.
- Students and young adults living at home or in shared houses, where one room has to do everything.
- Older teenagers who will soon be adults — buying an adult-rated bed now means it won't be outgrown.

Can I get a double high sleeper for adults?
The Kids Avenue high sleepers above are single beds, taking a 90 x 190cm or 90 x 200cm mattress depending on the model. If you need a wider sleeping area, we also stock raised small double designs from other brands, such as the PodBed Small Double High Sleeper and the Parisot Alexandra L-shaped double loft bed — check the weight guidance on each product page, or ask us before ordering.
If a raised bed isn't essential, a storage double such as the Heritage Lift-Up Ottoman Double Storage Bed (£499) or the small double version (£459) gives you a full-size double with storage underneath.
What to check before you buy
1. Maximum user weight
The most important figure. All Kids Avenue beds are rated to 100kg; for other brands, check the product page.
2. Ceiling height
Measure from the floor to the ceiling directly above where the bed will stand. An adult needs enough room to sit up comfortably on the mattress without being close to the ceiling — watch for sloped ceilings, light fittings and smoke alarms. If headroom is tight, a mid sleeper or cabin bed is the better choice.
3. Mattress size and depth
Our high sleepers take a 90 x 190cm or 90 x 200cm single mattress depending on the model. Don't exceed the manufacturer's maximum mattress depth — the guard rail is set a fixed height above the mattress, so a deeper mattress reduces its protection. See our Mattress Buying Guide and Bed Size Guide.
4. Space under the bed
Check the clearance under the bed against how you'll use it — sitting at a desk, sitting on a sofa, or hanging clothes. The dimensions are listed on each product page.
5. Assembly
Raised beds must be assembled correctly to be safe. Add our optional home assembly service at checkout and the manufacturer's own team will build it for you.
Adult high sleepers: common questions
What is the weight limit on a high sleeper?
It varies by manufacturer. Every Kids Avenue bed we sell has a maximum user weight of 100kg; for other brands, the limit is shown on the product page.
Are loft beds and high sleepers the same thing?
Yes — "loft bed" is the more common term in the US and for adult furniture, while "high sleeper" is the usual UK term. Both describe a single raised bed with usable space underneath.
Can two adults use a bunk bed?
Yes, on a bunk bed rated for adults — each Kids Avenue bunk is rated to 100kg per sleeper. Make sure there's enough headroom on both bunks.
Can I put a desk and a sofa under the same bed?
Yes. Several of our high sleepers, including the Noah B, C, D and E and the Urban High Sleeper 2, combine a desk and a sofa bed underneath.
Is a high sleeper suitable for a studio flat?
Very much so — it's one of the most space-efficient ways to fit a bed, a workspace and seating into one room.
Need help choosing?
Every high sleeper and bunk bed we sell meets EN 747, and every bed comes with free UK mainland delivery, and can be assembled for you by the manufacturer's own team. If you're not sure which bed fits your room, get in touch with your ceiling height and room dimensions — our team is available 8am–8pm, 365 days a year.
